Car Group Genji Perfect Speed

Bros don’t necessarily have to say anything to each other – they can stand beside their rides and just be completely comfortable with each other.

This is Genji Perfect Speed aka GPS. The GPS team was formed by a few good men who have been together through thick and thin. Their toys grew bigger as they move along in life, and this is where their love for naturally aspirated cars began. Who forms GPS, you may ask. Purely car enthusiasts irregardless of auto styling or performance, they come together on a common ground to share their drive experiences and impart automotive knowledge to each other.

GPS engaged us to shoot a small, private group of five cars, namely, two Mitsubishi Lancers, a Honda DC5 Integra, Subaru WRX and a Honda Stream. Apart from their racing inspired livery, exhaust notes of a healthy decibel dosage is also the common denominator.

2008 Audi A4 3.2L FSI Quattro, 2.0L and 1.8L Sedan

Three Audi A4s, three different power trains.

You could immediately hear the fury of exhaust notes these cars made a mile away before you get to see them. The leader of the pack was a special blue wrapped, naturally aspirated V6 3.2L FSI Quattro variant. Acting as sidekicks were two other A4 variants in murdered black and glorious white – a 1.8T FSI S-Line and a 2.0T FSI S-Tronic Quattro respectively – all tuned to unlock their engines’ potential.

Upon arrival, the trio quickly formed up behind our all-ready cam car to capture the first runs under an overcast morning sky. As we fired away the shots, it was inherent to us why the A4 continues to be one of the more popular executive sedans in the market, especially in the used car market.

Thanks to its bold styling and clean lines, the A4 still look timeless today despite being close to a decade old. It could also be the fact that the B6 A4 was the brainchild of Peter Schreyer way back two generations ago at Audi that has kept this design influence going strong. The A4 has the ability to blend spirited driving performance with passenger comfort at a reasonable price. This combination of factors is probably her recipe of success.

This is the reason why this A4 is so good looking. We usually don’t approve of sticking a big ass GT wing on a 4-door sedan but the owner took a gamble and it pays off handsomely, literally.

The machine is German but the heart is JDM. You can tell by the number of decals shouting Japan which the owner has stuck to the car.

Under the hood is Audi’s 3.2L V6 TFSI direct injection, capable of an impressive 265 horsepower and 243 pound feet of torque, mated to ZF transmission that delivers continuous power so smoothly to the wheels. It hits the century mark from stationery under 6.5 seconds. The interior boasts some custom fibre parts that adds to the overall appeal.

They say wheels maketh the car and the choice is a set of VMR 19 inchers which performs as good as it looks. The rims are machined in house specifically to the car to ensure proper bolt-on fitment.

Cars bond people and tuning them brings them even closer. It is a mark of achievement for the car lovers for the painstaking work and time devoted to leave a small legacy in the car scene.

Like a famous quote from the movie Band of Brothers, “From this day to the ending of the world, but we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.” For the three owners (and every other driver on this island), it is also “Till COE do us part”.

2013 Audi A1 1.0L Sportback

The owner of this bewitching red Audi A1 Sportback is a fan of lush greens and heritage roads. Well, actually most city dwellers like you and me do. Who wouldn’t? Having face the concrete jungle for most of our waking times, we long for that little escape into the wild to get back in touch with mother nature.

The striking Misano red supermini took to the B-roads gladly, much to delight of the owner. The premium 1.0 litre A1 Sportback is a surprising little car. Despite being a 3-cylinder (Audi’s first), the engine doesn’t sound nor drive like one, thanks to a small turbocharger and direct injection technology. It is adequately fast, nippy and hugs dearly to the tarmac whenever we push it round the corners. Some say it’s built to rival a Mini Cooper but in reality, they are two very different cars in terms of drive and styling.

Overall, the A1 Sportback is a very fashionable looking car, and there are no doubts on the equipment and interior luxury trims. With the downsizing of the engine capacity, it is definitely a car built for lower running costs and taxes for the smart urbanites.

2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

You want to lead, to be the coolest, have the most charm and be simply irresistible to any gender. Everyone wants to gravitate to and look like you in every way. (That, we believe is what the owner, Chris had in mind when he decided on the choice of colour.) In this case, you will be known as Blue Steel, a famous modeling move in comedy flick, Zoolander. On the contrary, this Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 in special matte lightning blue steel wrap is definitely not to be taken lightly.

With the help of both Liberty Walk performance and Novitec’s generous kitting of carbon fibre parts plus some exhaust tuning, and a full set of staggered polished liquid smoke ADV.1 rims (ADVNL2 MV1 SL – front 20″ X 9; rear 21″ X 12.5) to die for, right down to custom car mats made out of imported genuine bespoke crocodile skin, this Aventador has stylishly and audaciously transformed herself into an unimaginably meaner beast that looks perfect from any angle of approach.

Just take a look for yourself.

She could be the reason why you clicked on this post. Our model of the day is Rachel, a svelte young lady who is absolutely dressed to the nines to tame the beast. She has a natural flair flaunting her moves in her blue bodycon dress around the bull.

With an excellent vehicle like this, who is not compelled to pose like a supermodel?

This is our second Aventador shoot and we hell know how much this insane Italian engineering work of art sounds and moves.
Of course we would also prefer to capture some great moving angles but after our time ran lean from the modelling session, we only had the luxury of shooting it when Chris was leaving. The stress was on us now and we only had one chance to do it right. Luckily yes, we didn’t screw up.

2007 Mitsubishi Lancer EX 1.5L Sedan

The landscape is getting tougher to mod a car in Singapore especially with the recent clamp down on an ever increasing modification “ban” list that dampens local car enthusiasts here. Some make sense whereas a few, questionable. In any case, this did not prevent Jiawei from tinkering his Mitsubishi Lancer EX within the legal boundaries using his good eye for colour and body styling.

His favourite unspoken colour is Vermilion, a special hue of orange and red that is strikingly loud on the streets even at night. That goes up as the main wrap colour for his ride with black as a secondary colour accent.

Inspired by the brand’s halo car, the Evolution X, Jiawei’s car is fitted with rally style front lip and side skirt, CZ4A model’s bonnet hood, fender side vents and spoiler. Add on a set of black 18″ sports rims and the external visual appeal climbed up a few notches.

Visual appeal didn’t stop there. Swinging into the car, hints of vermillion peppered the interior. A striking gearbox with a custom cut panel in glossy vermillion that looks oh so juicy greeted us. We then noticed the IU cover, mobile phone holder, steering wheel emblem, right down to the car mats are of vermillion shade too. Now, that’s styling consistency!
With the haze hitting us hard during the shoot, we knew the best opportunity was here to create mystery and intrigue in our shots. This dark, secluded back alley in the CBD has indeed made the haze work in our favour.  No single smoke machine in the market could replicate such an authentic feel to the final edits. The downside? We literally had to shoot wearing our N95 masks for a couple of hours.

2014 Audi A3 1.4L Sedan

A Glacier White Audi A3 sedan sped graciously down the highway on a moonless night, occasionally grunting to hint at the need for a harder push on the pedal. It takes joy in acceleration and release of tensions built up in the turbocharger very much like a pressure cooker.

Yet at the same time, the new A-segment sedan prides itself in plush interior comfort and noise deadening from the outside world. Spotting a shorter but wider wheel base than a regular sedan means it can also take more punches at the steering wheel when cornering. The whole ride becomes more agile and receives more feedback from the road directly beneath.

This handsome, Bauhaus-design inspired German marque 1.4L TFSI A3 sedan may be categorised as an entry level, but everything else about it shouts premium and is equally rewarding to drive like any other Audis. No doubt on shoot location, it became the subject of second glances and admiration from passers-by.

Meet Sean, the man behind this machine. He is camera shy so there won’t be any shots of him here (in case you’re looking for them). However, just by looking at the tasteful “upgrades” done to his car, you can immediately relate to him as a connoisseur of style and fashion. We leave it as that to your imagination.

First up on mods, the frontal bodykit is from Rieger, complete with honeycomb front grille inscribed with QUATTRO wordings. Next, the rear end is kitted with an S3 diffuser and stock exos upgraded to a growly Remus Sport. A fine little touch of carbon fibre boot lid spoiler is added to increase the sporty draw.
They say wheels make or break the car, and a delicate subject when it comes to what rim design fits best. In this case, a set of Vertini Concave rims with JBT big brake kit from Top93 Sports Rims has totally redefined the character outlook of this Audi A3.

Appeal factor up 200 percentage points we say! The rest of the photos for your viewing pleasure.

2011 Audi A5 2.0L Coupe and Sportback

Audis are commonly sighted in affluent cities and especially so in Singapore where the brand is known to market itself pretty aggressively here. With a sizeable chunk of the car population being dominated by the German brand, and with black and white being the popular colour choices, it gets increasingly hard to find your Audi in the car parks at times.

Owners start looking out for creative ways to stand out from the crowd by customising their rides. There are many aftermarket motor workshops catering to do just that. Be it from rims, bodykits, grilles, to exhaust and lighting accessories.

One such local company is MC2 Styling who designs and develops customised full bodykits and parks it under a brand called BlacKrome. They have recently launched their new workshop and done up two show cars to gain foothold in this specialised area. Part of the strategy is to create brand collaterals with new imagery and we were subsequently engaged to produce some stunning shots with the help of model Jasline.

Volkswagen Beetle 1.2L TSI Coupe

Let’s be honest. You either love this car or you loathe it. There is no compromise. We had polarizing opinions when Volkswagen gave us their most iconic car for a weekend to shoot. One of us is a big fan while the other, well… not quite. However, things are about to change and we will find out at the end.
The Volkswagen Beetle is a car with a rich heritage, so rich it traces it’s roots to the original Porsche engineer. We will not conduct any history lessons here. Just do a search online and results showing the number of bug stories are already good indicators. Volkswagen calls the new Beetle “the iconic original”, a title that is both fitting and genuine to begin with.

The third generation Beetle has stepped out of her predecessor’s flowery look and adopted a meaner and wider stance. Volkswagen has sliced her top, streamlined the profile and engineered a sportier genome in her DNA. The result is nothing like the old Beetle but a less than cuter “Porsche” that carries that happy look of her ancestors. Throw in that spoiler, up that rim size, and we would safely say she is starting to appeal to a wider audience with that man-up quotient!

Our shoot starts upon the first light of a Sunday morning. With a sense of country side lifestyle persona running deep within, we brought the Beetle to the suburb to strut its stuff. Without hesitation, the Beetle blends into the surroundings effortlessly like a duck takes to water.

A combination of stationary compositions and still shots were applied to accentuate it’s curves and exemplify its details. The Beetle is then brought for a ride around the suburb against the backdrop of the sunrise.

As it negotiates the turns and straights, we executed our signature rolling shots, capturing the finer details of its movements and to a certain extend, the speed. Yes, the speed! As the ride progresses, the nagging urge of the beetle raring to go keeps getting stronger. We decided the environment of the suburb could no longer contain the spirit of the new Beetle and with that, we released it on the highway and found some friends along the way.

Surprisingly, the tiny yet punchy 1.2L TSI engine powering the Beetle was more than sufficient to tackle Singapore roads. In fact, it drives like a 1.6L because of the turbocharging. Buttery smooth gearing also plays a part in delivering a holistic driving experience. The fuel gauge needle seemed to be stuck forever at the full tank (1/1) mark despite us revving most of the time in Sports mode. Sorry Volkswagen! After covering almost 100 km, the needle finally moved. Just one bar. It was both disturbing and amazing at the same time as we were usually not used to such phenomenon. Good on the wallet we say!  Drawing our attention back to the interior, the one who initially disagreed with the Beetle finally found his comfort with her. Gauges are purposeful and clear, two of them even display the turbo boost and oil temperature on the dashboard, performance car style. Neat chrome trimmings and high quality plastic finishing swathed the original-bug-inspired cabin. Someone has been secretly converted. The new Beetle is truly a modern classic and catches the attention of the young, the hipster and the old alike!

You may consider renting the bug from Volkswagen Singapore for special occasions. Find out here: www.volkswagen.com.sg/en/promotions/wedding-beetle.html

2011 Mercedes SLS AMG 6.2L

Iconic as it is, the Mercedes AMG SLS reminds us, in pure character of the original 1955 300 SL that inspired her distinctive gullwing doors. Highly competent, exquisitely engineered and an exhaust note fit for all ages, the SLS is a great, if not the best, perfectly balanced driving machine in the market.

What you are looking at is possibly Germany’s fastest and best all rounder super sports car with an eclectic touch of retro styling, and the one and only matte blue skinned right here in Singapore by WrapStyle. Are you stoked yet?

Perhaps a little visual cue on why we likened the SLS AMG to the 300SL roadster. One of us who visited the Mercedes Benz museum in Stuttgart, Germany a couple of years back, managed to retrieve a priceless shot of the gleaming 3-pointed star automotive immortal. And in the same exact angle, we took a shot of the modern SLS, complete in full glory of her roof-hinged gullwings spread out.

(sgcarshoot file picture: Mercedes Benz 300SL at the Mercedes Benz museum, Stuttgart, Germany, 2011)

It is heartening to see that Mercedes has given the SLS a similar sweeping roofline, interior colour treatment, and facade styling (minus the chromes) as the elder one.
Powertrain wise, do not doubt Mercedes’ exclusive in-house tuner AMG. Leave no question about her sportiness as it catapults like a bullet leaving the gun barrel, covering the century dash in 3.7 seconds with a top speed whiffing 330 km/h.

Very growly, very agile, very precise, very grippy and very powerful braking is the way to sum up the SLS AMG in a single line. As for us after a few patient years of wait and setup, it is mission accomplished.

2011 Maserati Granturismo MC Stradale X 2015 BMW i8

“This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” – Morpheus.

If the millennium was your thing, you may have already heard of this hit line in the Matrix trilogy, a sci-fi action film about Earth being dominated by sentient machines rebelling against humanity. It was undeniably on the favourite movie list of millions that boasted new camera tricks and ideas, and a virtually immersive story line that pokes deep into the meaning of life.

Since then, the red and blue pill concept has become popular culture symbols representing the choice between embracing the sometimes painful truth of reality and the blissful ignorance of illusion. In this case, the subconscious mind does translate to a perfect fit for our photo subjects – A red Maserati Granturismo MC Stradale representing today’s combustion engine prowess, and a blue BMW i8 that just happens to arrive from the future.
Say hello to the 1.5L plug-in hybrid supercar on the left and the 4.7L V8 petrol engine supercar on the right.

Today, we took the the red pill.

There is no right or wrong but this choice allowed us to experience explosive raw power on tap. This is not just a regular Maserati GranTurismo, mind you. It is a dearer, more powerful, stiffer, lower and lighter GranTurismo MC Stradale. One look, you can’t miss the striking trident that was inspired by the Neptune fountain in Bologna, Italy – the hallmark of Maserati since 1914.

Enter the driver’s cockpit, press the start button, and the 450 odd bhp engine breathes delightfully into life! The Singapore city skyline appears even more astoundingly beautiful with the striking red maser roaring down her boulevards. The owner has tastefully added subtle design touches to the bodywork and the final outcome looks unquestionably fantastic.
As the duo rolls down the underground freeway, it was an absolute sight to behold. Two very different cars but yet serving a common purpose; that is pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering and design, and delivering unparalleled transportation satisfaction for the car nuts.
And this is us ending in Matrix style… If you take the blue pill, your electrifying dream begins. You wake up in your bed and believe you can save the world. You take the red pill, you stay true to fuel addiction, and we will show you how deafening that V8 rumbles.

Till next time when we pop the blue pill!
